Art and Culture
Huesca preserves the treasure of its thousand-year-old history inviting you to visit its different cultural displays. You can appreciate the Romanesque art in “San Pedro el Viejo”, pantheon of the Kings in Aragón, which, thanks to its cloister, is the best example of Romanesque art in Spain and it’s one of its symbols; Gothic in the Cathedral, Renaissance in its altarpiece and in the city hall; Baroque in “Santo Domingo” and “San Lorenzo” and Modernist in the “Casino”.
Some examples of Romanesque art in the province are, among others, the “Monasterio Viejo de San Juan de la Peña” which is the most important in Aragón and where, according to legend, the Holy Grail remained, or the “Castillo de Loarre”, best preserved castle in the world, which has been the setting of blockbusters filming such as Kingdom of heaven by the prestigious British director Ridley Scott.

Likewise in the city there is the outstanding “Diocesano” museum, the “CDAN” and the Provincial museum as well as the “Pedagógico” museum of Aragón.
Huesca is renowned as an active city. Culture, art and the latest avant-garde has great importance in this city. As an example we’ve got the modern CDAN, created by Rafael Moneo to house the Beulas legacy and to present the best creators of art related to nature making artistic interventions in the open air in different parts of the province. However, we can also find good quality samples of contemporary art in the exhibition hall of the “Diputación” or in the Cultural Centre the “Matadero”, as well as other halls in the city.
Live culture, on the other hand, includes festivals of international renown such as the Film Festival of Huesca and performances of theatre, dance, music and alternative art like “Periferias” and “Okuparte” in the inner city or the International Festival of Cultures “Pirineos Sur” in the ideal setting of Lanuza reservoir. This whole exhibit shows the great cultural and artistic variety that Huesca has to offer.
